Full-Grain vs Top-Grain Leather

Leather grades can sound confusing, but the two you will hear most are full-grain and top-grain.
Full-grain
Full-grain leather keeps the natural surface of the hide, so it shows its natural texture and develops a patina as it ages. It is the most durable grade and the usual choice for riding gear.
Top-grain
Top-grain leather is lightly sanded to even out the surface, giving a smoother, more uniform look while still being strong. It is common in fashion jackets, shoes and wallets.
Which should you choose?
For riding, choose full-grain. For everyday fashion pieces, both grades can look excellent when well finished. In both cases, ask about thickness and stitching, not only the grade name.
